when we couldn't anymore
we walked down
past the construction
to Mcdonalds
it hurt our eyes
after seeing all that night
we suddenly
weren't hungry
so we stopped at the Shell
and you bought
a pack of smokes you
said
you'd share
all this
in your underwear
and no shoes
and no bra on
under my virgin wool sweater
you said
wasn't too scratchy
no
it's nice
walked back
past the smell
of new road
past the sleepy windows
of my neighbors
who could
just as easily
live like this
stupidly and for just a little while
summer falling like wet ink
into the lines in our hands
and you thought it
was wrong
at first
and said so
with your eyes closed
and your hand
on my belt
but then
the night just
got darker
